Concepts Before Coverage - Toolkit 09
Designing elementary learning for connection, depth, transfer and meaning.
Toolkit 09:
Includes: the CONCEPT design audit • age-responsive conceptual learning guidance • learner theory tools • examples and non-examples planners • generalisation builders • transfer tasks • a leadership conceptual-learning walkthrough
This toolkit is designed to help teachers, teams and school leaders plan, review and strengthen conceptual learning across classroom inquiry, disciplinary learning, assessment and transfer. It supports educators in moving beyond simply covering content towards helping learners recognise relationships, build deeper understanding, and use ideas in new contexts.
Its ideas are grounded in a learner-first conceptual stance: beginning with curiosity about how learners are already making meaning, rather than starting with an adult-defined abstract concept. Learners are supported to work with examples, relationships, questions, evidence, and different contexts so that understanding becomes increasingly connected, precise, and transferable.
The toolkit supports a shift from coverage to understanding. Facts, skills and disciplinary knowledge remain important, but they are connected to larger ideas, enabling learners to explain relationships, test generalisations, revise their thinking and transfer their understanding beyond the context in which it was first learned.
